The National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation

About Us

Known as the birthplace of American railroading, the National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation invites you to experience progress while exploring the past, the present, and the possible.

Our Story

Formerly the B&O Railroad Museum, we renamed in July 2026 to celebrate our 2027 bicentennial, as well as our ever-increasing role as an engine of influence—one that started in Baltimore and never stopped!

Featuring a wide range of unique experiences across a full and expanding campus, we highlight the ingenuity that built—and continues to build—a nation.

So go ahead, ride a train along the first mile of commercial track ever laid in the country. Admire the machines that built a nation while you envision what will build the future. Or listen to fascinating stories unfold in the very place where American railroading began.

From iconic exhibits that integrate modern technology, storytelling, and hands-on experiences to expansion projects like the amphitheater and Innovation Hall in January 2027 that highlight the power of human potential, we welcome all ages and abilities on board.

“Wonderful rail museum with many historic engines, passenger cars, mail car, troop transport, and more. Several models layouts including the Smithsonian collection of models which was amazing. Wonderful presentation on the underground railroad. We will visit again.”
